Summary on Grant Application Form
We believe that a significant barrier to the proliferation of plasma processing is not the capital cost associated with vacuum equipment (as often cited), but rather, it is the large differences in deposit properties obtained with laboratory scale reactors compared to commercial scale plant. The aim of the proposed project is to use state-of-the art plasma diagnosis to quantitatively determine the role of the various species in the polymerisation process of well-known monomers used for functional group retention and thus to enable development of the pulsed-plasma polymerisation process to the stage where industrial application may more readily be achieved. This project will combine the different but complementary skills and expertise of two academic groups (one pursuing basic plasma physics and diagnostics and the other application of chemically functionalised plasma polymerisation) to make significant advances in the understanding of the plasma polymerisation processes and ultimately the development of new material properties through control of the process.
