Summary on Grant Application Form
In the last few years, strong evidence has emerged from the surface physics community that simple liquids can slip against solid surfaces if the latter are both very smooth and non-wetting. The Applicant has shown theoretically how this phenomenon of slip-at-the wall can be used to greatly reduce friction in low load hydrodynamic slider bearings. Such slip may also be one mechanism by which organic friction modifiers reduce friction. The proposed work involves an experimental study of liquid slip in fluid film lubrication. A slider bearing will be set up in which one surface is both smooth and non-wetted and the impact on friction of consequent lubricant slip at this surface will be quantified. The aim will be to prove the principle of the halfwetted bearing and to identify the main parameters that control liquid slip. The influence of friction modifier additives on slip and consequent friction in full film lubrication conditions will also be investigated. A fluorescence technique will be developed and applied to directly measure the extent of slip in a load beraing, lubricated contact for the first time.
