The background to this request for an Overseas Travel Grant is the work being carried out in a current EPSRC Research Grant GR/N35595 held by the PI and 2 co-investigators Dr D.A. Stone and Dr R.C Tozer. A major objective of the programme is to create a powerful time-dependent, 3-D plasma model based on the leading engineering computational fluid dynamics code Fluent 6. This has been achieved and the model is being applied to model a number of technological plasmas. A particular objective of GR/N35595 is to apply the new code to describe pulse operated Hg-rare gas discharges (such discharges operated ac are the basis of fluorescent lamps). A consequence of pulsed operation is that more, much higher lying atomic states are involved in the discharge dynamics than in similar discharges operated ac or dc. The pulse operated discharges are a novel basis for new light sources. Ilnelastic scattering cross section data is not available for electron collisions with these states and theoretical methods must be used. The award of the grant will allow the PI and the PDRA to establish a collaboration with a research group that have developed powerful methods to calculate the required data. The results of simulations using the new data will be critically compared with new experimental data generated also in GR/N35595.
