Summary on Grant Application Form
At the periphery of the Internet novel networked systems, such as home or emergency networks, are emerging to offer user oriented services centered around the need for Quality of Service. We will investigate such systems via the concept of Self Aware Networks (SAN) which will consider QoS in a broader sense than typically employed in networking. Examples of QoS goals that a user can request of a SAN will include: Get me the data object Ob via the path(s) of highest bandwidth which you can find , or Connect me to mobile user Mn through paths which minimize power consumption'. Our research will address how a SAN may accept direction from users, and report back to users whether these goals have been achieved. We will investigate algorithms that exploit self-observation with the help of smart packets (SPs) to develop awareness of system state including location of nodes, connectivity, power levels, paths and QoS. We will investigate learning algorithms that use the experience of SPs to provide system robustness and discover paths to nodes and data objects with improved QoS. A test-bed embodying these concepts will be demonstrated together with sample applications. The project will be conducted in close contact with industry.
