Aerosols play a pivotal role in many areas of science, from atmospheric chemistry through to combustion science. Although techniques have been developed to probe chemistry at planar liquid interfaces, there are few techniques for probing the chemistry of aerosols directly. The primary objective of this fellowship is to design and implement new techniques for probing the chemical and physical transformation of aerosols, and to interface this with ongoing research in the applicant's research group on aerosol dynamics. An optical tweezers instrument for trapping a single particle with a laser beam will be combined with optical techniques for probing the size and composition of single particles. This will enable the progress of chemical reactions and physical transformations to be followed under controlled laboratory conditions. Fundamental factors influencing heterogeneous chemistry at the liquid interface of an aerosol particle will be examined. It is anticipated that these studies will not only improve our understanding of fundamental processes at liquic interfaces but will also improve our understanding of the key role that aerosols lay in many applied areas of science. For example, the combination of the optical tweezers and laser probe techniques could yield a new method for sampling and analysing atmospheric aerosol particles.
