Summary on Grant Application Form
A novel gelforming processing is proposed for the rapid and cost effective fabrication of net shape ceramics. The gelforming processing is based on colloidal processing where crosslinkable polymer systems are used to assist high shear deagglomeration to form highly homogeneous and deformable ceramic green bodies with exceptionally high green strength. These features make it possible for the rapid and cost effective fabriaction of net shape ceramics using green machining techniques which are difficult to achive using the current ceramic processing technologies. The work will potentially revolutionise the current manufacturing technologies in ceramic industry and open up new oppertunities for advanced ceramics in such emerging applications as biomedical implants and contribute to the improvement of the quality of life. The technology developed in this work will also be potentially applicable to the powder metallurgy industry
