Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research has three interlinked themes with the overall objective of making real-time dynamic substructuring possible for complex engineering systems. The first theme is that of hybrid systems which will be used in two ways. Firstly to improve the control stability and robustness, and secondly to develop models of highly nonlinear problems such as gear rattle. The second theme is that of adaptive control, which must be implemented in real-time for systems with multiple interfaces between the experimental and numerical model. The final theme will bring together these results in a substructuring implementation where nonlinear engineering systems will be tested. There are significant potential benefits of this work to applications such as improved design of earthquake resistant structures.
