Summary on Grant Application Form
The rapid advancement in multimedia technology generates new forms of media and communications, which can be used to increase the quality of educational material. Within the field of Construction and the Built environment, it is believed that these e-learning multimedia material support superior forms of learning, i.e., experiential learning (the form of learning required in construction). They also allow the learner to adjust the pace, content difficulty and sequencing of instructional materials. Although costly and time consuming to develop, the use of e-learning multimedia material can soon become out of date, because of their incompatibility with new systems or platforms. This makes instructional courseware become locally effective, but globally fragmentary. However, most of the technology needed to build flexible and open learning systems is now available. What is really lacking is 'content', in the form of objects that are 'sharable content objects'. These need to be readily accessible across the Web, or via whatever form the future global information ends up taking. This research intends to aid educators and software developers to rebuild the learning components of multimedia e-learning tools, by producing an on-line library of sharable learning objects that are interoperable, transparent and can be integrated within various e-learning environments.
