The project investigates the use of small negative air ions to disinfect air in hospital buildings. It follows on from a successful pilot study at St. James's Hospital, Leeds, which demonstrated, for the first time, the ability of small negative air ions to reduce the airborne transmission of infection in hospitals. The project involves complementary experimental and CFD modelling work, together with some hospital-based work, and aims to:obtain reliable data regarding the relative susceptibility of various airborne nosocomial pathogens to negative air ions;obtain a greater understanding of the physical and biological mechanisms associated with the airborne transmission of infection in hospital buildings; obtain a greater understanding of the potential for using negative air ionisers in hospital buildings; andestablish guidelines and recommendations for the optimisation of negative air ionisers in hospital buildings.
