We are proposing a completely new method of medical imaging that exploits X-ray scattering to produce maps/images of the molecular states of specific large molecules (e.g. proteins and/or lipids) within tissues. This is a high risk and ambitious programmeas it is unclear whether current technologic provide the X-ray sources and rapid processing required and diagnostic markers based on small angle scattering have yet to be proven. However potential advantages of successfully developing such a technique for both patient benefit and resource savings cannot be overstated. A high reso non-invasive, imaging technique that is tissue/disease specific is, for many clinicians, the 'holy grail' of medical diagnostics. It would, for example, obviate the need for invasive procedures to obtain a confirmatory pathological diagnosis.The technique proposed would most certainly revolutionise medical diagnosis, even if it can only be exploited for soft tissue cancers (e.g. breast cancer).
