Summary on Grant Application Form
This platform grant addresses the interrelated areas of fibre fabrication, grating writing in fibres, femtosecond fibre laser sources and applications of femtosecond pulses in micro- and nano-machining. In detail, we will look at the development of speciality rare earth doped fibres with large core and cladding dimensions, and investigate their use in fibre lasers operating in new wavelength regions. We will develop fibres with enhanced photosensitivity, and pursue the fabrication of fibres with extreme cross sections such as 'ribbon fibre'. In the area of fibre gratings, we will develop tuneable fibre grating devices whose response can be adjusted in both amplitude and phase, including development of accurate superstructure profile for manipulation of ultrashort pulses. Lastly, we will use a commercial femtosecond laser source for a range of applications involving micro/nanomachining and develop our own fibre laser femtosecond laser sources for UV, high harmonic and potentially X-ray generation.
