Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is concerned with the physics of high power density solid state gain media in planar waveguide structures coupled with hybr waveguide/unstable resonators, and their exploitation for the development of practical technologies for high beam quality laser device with flexible waveforms at multi-kilowatt powers. New techniques that we have recently developed which produce much increased beam brightness from diode stacks will be applied both to proximity face-pumping and edge pumping of planar waveguides. Imaging concepts will be developed to permit the use 'thick' multimode waveguides in single mode resonators, and scaling of compact lasers to the 1 kW level will be investigated. We will also explore th use of other gain materials including Yb:YAG, Yb:Tungstate and sintered ceramic hosts as well as 946nm operation of Nd:YAG.
