The primary aim of the Programme is to supply high quality samples of metallic elements, alloys and compounds for use in EPSRC-funded metal physics research. By continuing to supply samples to around 20 groups at universities and research institutions, we intend to support their world class researches into magnetism (both fundamental and applied), fermiology, metal surfaces, superconductivity etc; for many of these groups we are the only source for their specialist samples. In the fields of purification, crystal growth and preparation of samples of metallic materials, we are undoubtedly the most comprehensively equipped laboratory in the country having facilities for working with materials containing the vast majority of metallic elements, including reactive metals such as the rare earths and the radioactive elements thorium and uranium. More importantly, the personnel on our Programme have unique expertise in this very specialised area of research. We propose to back up the supply of samples by continuing our purification and crystal growth researches: in particular we wish to assess the technique of hydrogen plasma arc melting for refining metallic elements and alloys and to adapt an image crystal growth furnace for use with lanthanum cuprate-based materials.
