To set up a network for smart textiles that will constitute a THINK TANK for future intelligent/smart consumer products and applications in the context of societal futures, by bringing together all sectors that would be involved in the design, development and production chain. They include: Application based industries, defence, polymer and fibre engineering, cognitive and social science, ICT, ambient/pervasive computing and intelligence, electronics, technical textiles, smart materials, interaction design, fashion, textile, industrial/product, interior and architectural design, trade associations and government bodies. In so doing to provide: A forum to debate and discuss issues surrounding the incorporation of SMART capabilities and functions into textiles for future apparel [to include fashion], and environment [to include interiors] products, among these disparate disciplines. To facilitate understanding and break down barriers between disciplines by providing opportunities to experience disciplines, and through information exchange. To broker partnerships to generate R+D programmes. The principal benefit will be the development of new proposals for production and development systems, and of a new community that will arise, not out of subject specialisms, but out of a thematic approach to materials and product development.
