Summary on Grant Application Form
In normal metals, electrons are free to travel in all three-dimensions and their low-energy excitations, even in the presence of strong electron interactions, can be well described by Fermi-liquid theory. When charge becomes confined to lower dimensions, however, Fermi-liquid theory breaks down and new paradigms are sought. In the purely one-dimensional Luttinger liquid ground state, for example, the spin and charge of an electron become decoupled. The study of materials at the boundary of this exotic ground state naturally provide important information on the parameters that lea to a breakdown of Fermi-liquid theory and the evolution of different states of quantum order as the effective dimensionality of the system is varied. The Pr-based cuprates are exceptional in this regard in that 1 D, 2D and 3D metallic states are all accessible in a laboratory environment and represent a new playground for confronting theoretical predictions for the distinctive properties of the Luttinger liquid with experimental reality. This research proposal aims to explore the role of dimensionality on the metallic state of Pr-based cuprates through a comprehensive set of magneto-transport and thermal transport measurements on high-quality single crystals. Complementary real- space and momentum-space imaging of the underlying electronic structur will be orovided throuah collaborators in the US workina on scannino tunnelina microscoov and anale-resolved-Dhotoemission soectroscoov.
