This work aims to use intense and ultra-short electric field pulses for preferential induction of cancer cell suicide and for non-invasive reduction of solid tumour embedded inside a tissue mass. Leaping from the current capability of electrically triggerd apoptosis to white blood cells, the proposed research seeks to electrically disrupt the proliferation of cancer cells for their programmed suicide without undue damage to normal cells. The proposed research is speculative, bold and adventurous. It challenges current thinking and capabilities, by pushing the electrical engineering technology well beyond its existing boundary with cancer cell biology. Adventurous objectives such as pulse-breast coupling and malignant-normal tissue differentiation will be met with novel techniques such as field applicator and conductance matching. If successfully developed, the proposed research will provide a completely new and potentially groundbreaking cancer therapy with the distinctive advantages of non-invasiveness, simplicity and reduced dosage when used as a complementary technique. The funding requested will enable us to capitalise on this exceptional opportunity, and is confidently expected to establish the UK as a world leader in this emerging and distinctively cross-disciplinary field.
