Professor Gefen (The Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel) is a world expert in mesoscopic physics and physics of strongly correlated electron systems. The aim of his research visit is to establish collaboration in a new theoretical project in spintronics, a rapidly emerging field in condensed matter physics, where the spin effects define the physics of solid-state systems on submicron scales. The proposal addresses some new, important aspects of mesoscopic spin physics on a genuine quantum mechanical level, going beyond master equation and rate equation- type analysis. By successfully pursuing this line of research we aim at a two-fold goal: (1) extend the knowledge in the field of spin transport at a genuine quantum mechanical level (2) consolidate and develop a many-body understanding of mesoscopic spin physics that could further our understanding of quantum spin devices and logic elements.
