Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal exploits EPR spectroscopy to probe reactions and organisation of the organic layer at the surface of Au nanoparticles. Our approach relies on the synthesis of a series of nitroxide-modified ligands, and an EPR study of their adsorption on the Au nanoparticles. We will investigate the mechanism of the exchange reaction at the Au nanoparticle surface. As the properties of nanoparticles are intermediate betv those of clusters and bulk materials, we believe that mechanistic understanding of such reactions has considerable fundamental importance and is relevant to the heterogeneous catalysis applications. We will also explore the organisation of the organic ligands on the Au surface. We will characterise the dynamics and packing of the ligands, and study permeability of the organic layer. Specially designed polynitroxide ligands will allow the mobility the ligands on the surface and the binding sites distribution to be probed. We believe the EPR spectroscopy of spin-labelled nanoparticles will prove a powerful tool to obtain previously unavailable information about the structure and dynamics of the nanoparticle shell, and the mechanisms of surface reactions.
