The formation of extended network structures by linking metal centres with polytopic ligands is a major growth area in chemistry, with potential applications in separations, gas storage, catalysis and sensing. This project aims to develop new network structures based on linking metal centres using functionalised B-diketonate ligands. These ligands contain a number of features - charge, dentacity and ability to support clusters - that are similar to those of dicarboxylates, which have been used very successfully to generate robust porous coordination networks. Three classes of ligand will be explored during the project - di(acetylacetonates), B-diketonates functionalised at the central carbon atom, and B-diketonates functionalised at the peripheral carbon atoms. The reactions of these ligands with a range of transition metal ions will be explored and the products characterised by a combination of techniques including single crystal X-ray crystallography. The thermal properties of the new materials will be investigated, and their adsorption and transport properties will also be studied.
