The purpose of this project is the study of magnetic properties of two classes of magnetic materials (the hexaborides and polymerised carbon-60) and the so-called magnetic superconductors. It will bring together x-ray scattering and absorption methods to study both the net and local moments in these systems. A combination of spin-polarised Compton scattering and x-ray magnetic dichroism will be used to identify the atomic sites and orbitals responsible for the magnetism in itinerant and 4f materials. This combination will also permit the surface and bulk contributions to be studies. X-ray imission spectroscopy will be used to study local moments. One of the objectives is to develop high field spin-polarised Compton scattering experiments at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF): measurements will be extended to 8T from the present maximum of 1T. This will vastly increase the range of problems that can be addressed using the technique. Firstly, it means metamagnetic can be studied where the transition ia at a field greater than 1T, and secondly, it can greatly increase the measurement's sensitivity in many systems, since this is proportional to the square of the induced magnetic moment.
