Summary on Grant Application Form
The work is divided between Cambridge Engineering, Oxford Engineering and Bristol Physics. The Cambridge part of the work involves two groups at Cambridge one (under Prof Coles) is concerned with the synthesis of new materials showing high birefringence in the Infrared with, hopefully, other desirable properties, such as low viscosity and high dielectric anisotropy, the other (under Prof Crossland) is concerned with materials assessment, the evaluation of liquid crystal alignment techniques in association with a range of potentially useful etectro-optic effects, the measurement of phase response for a number of electro-optic effects and the development of and measurement of the performance of test devices.Oxford are concerned with 3D device modelling and also with mixture formulation.Bristol are involved in modelling on the molecular level the facts allowing high bireffingence in the infrared, their work will also involve measurements of birefringence at the appropriate wavelength and of infrared absorption spectra
