Summary on Grant Application Form
Following some literature precedents, some novel copolymers based on radical ring-opening polymerizations of chemically functional vinylcyclopropanes and vinylcyclobutanes are to be prepared and fully characterized. We shall be particularly interested in seeking polymers witl glass transition temperatures and with nitratable functional groups capable of being cured to give energetic, elastomeric materials with potential applications as energetic binders for munitions and propellants. These potential applications are to be explored in concert with QinetiQ and DST are seeking formulations with better performance than currently accessible materials. We expect also that similar copolymers, but with phosphor containing groups, will have the potential to be used as UV curable dental adhesives, owing to their anticipated very small volume contractions c curing. Some exploratory experiments in this area will be conducted with the assistance of Sheffield's School of Clinical Dentistry.
