Summary on Grant Application Form
The research aim is to integrate the provable security paradigm and side channel analysis. The fact that this has not been investigated before has led to the awkward situation in which protocols, which are proven to be secure in the current model, are being standardised, but at the same time the implementations of these protocols are being broken with very simple technical means. This project aims to resolve this situation by conducting research under the following three themes. Firstly, we aim to extend the existing security models to take into account side channel attacks, such as DPA and DEMA. Secondly, we aim to design new encryption and signature primitives and investigate existing ones in the extended model of security. This will result in a general design methodology, which will facilitate the design and implementation of new primitives. Finally, we will investigate implications of this methodology on algorithm and chip design, with an emphasis on smart card design.
