The Radical -Polar Crossover Reaction was developed in my laboratories. It is a new and successful methodology for making C-C bonds by radical chemistry, and selectively functionalising the product in an oxidative manner. It is catalytic, and obviates the use of toxic tin reagents for radical generation.Until now, the reaction has only been applied to arenediazonium salts as substrates. This submission proposes (i) to optimise the catalytic power of the reaction with arenediazonium salts, (ii) to extend the scope of the reaction to include aliphatic substrates using new radical-polar crossover catalysts; this could have significant applications to radical and non-radical reactions alike. We propose a clean and catalytic alternative to the Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation reactions, as well as reactions equivalent to radical atom-transfer reactions that are currently achieved with toxic tin reagents. Many of these current processes pose major environmental problems.
