Summary on Grant Application Form
The oxidation of model and complex substrates using molecular oxygen as oxidant will be investigated using novel gold catalysts. Initial reactions will investigate oxidation of alcohols to acids and the epoxidation of carbon carbon double bonds. The use of basicity control in the reaction media will be used to control the oxidation of just one functional group in the presence of several oxidisable functional groups. The gold catalysts will use precipitation/deposition and hydrothermal preparation routes to generate materials comprising nano-dispersed AU(0) and Au(III) The overall aim is to develop a generic approach to the design of oxidation catalysts for use in the fine chemicals industry. The catalysts will be evaluated using a novel capillary flow reactor and the catalyst/reaction/reactor will be characterised in situ using nmr imaging under the reaction conditions.
