This proposal is collaboration between an inorganic and an organic chemist in the area of catalysis. It is intended to exploit exciting recent preliminary results from the Whittlesey and Williams research groups in developing some novel reactions for formation of C-C bonds and to understand the nature of the catalysts that are able to effect these reactions. A series of ruthenium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes will be developed that are able to effect transfer hydrogenation reactions involving carbonyl compounds and alkenes, as well as other related processes. In particular, crossover transfer hydrogenation experiments will be performed in order to effect the reduction of alkenes using isopropanol as well as the oxidation of alcohols using simple alkenes. The Wittig reaction of alcohols will be further developed to allow mild reaction conditions and high turnover numbers for a wide range of substrates. The concept of 'alcohol-to-carbonyl' activation will also be exploited for C-C bond forming reactions via transient enolate formation.
