Summary on Grant Application Form
A new approach to catalyst recovery is proposed. Catalysts that have temperature dependent solubility properties will be prepared. They will have a desirable combination of the properties of homogeneous catalysts (soluble at reactor temperatures) and heterogeneous catalysts (insoluble in organic products and readily separated). New phosphine-based transition metal complexes will be prepared that contain a network of hydrogen bond acceptor/donor sites that will result in the reversible formation of hydrogen bonded supramolecules which are insoluble in organic solvents/products. Such networks are known to depolymerise at higher temperatures, rendering the monomeric complexes soluble in organic solvents. We propose to demonstrate the application of this concept to catalyst separation in rhodium catalysed hydroformylation of medium chain alkenes: a bulk scale process that suffers from catalyst separation difficulties (an environmentally unfriendly cobalt system is used instead).
