Summary on Grant Application Form
Current theories of dielectric loss to describe real materials suffer from certain problems. These are:a) The discrepancy (often orders of magnitude) between predicted values for dielectric loss and observed values.b) The discrepancy between the observed temperature dependence of the loss for both polycrystalline ceramics and single crystals with theory. c) The inability of the theory to cope with departure from symmetry. This includes the introduction of grain boundaries. The aim of this proposal is to carry out measurements of dielectric loss, relative permitivity, temperature coefficient of frequency, Raman, IR and wave speed on single crystals and polycrystalline oxides. These measurements will then be used to verify the modelling of losses in single crystals and polycrystalline dielectrics.
