Summary on Grant Application Form
The Oxford electron beam ion trap (EBIT) will be used to conduct a range of high resolution x-ray spectroscopy experiments:i.) Observation of the close coincidences of the Lyman - alpha transitions in hydrogenic manganese and the Lyman - beta transitions in hydrogenic vanadium, as a means of measuring the difference in their ground state Lamb shifts. The Oxford EBIT will be used to produce, confine, and by electron impact excitation, drive light emission in the x-ray region from these highly charged ions. We aim to reach sub part-per-million (ppm) accuracy, where we will be sensitive to second order QED corrections. ii.) Development of calibration techniques in order to measure x-ray wavelengths with an absolute precision approaching 1 ppm.iii.) Investigation of the time dependent (pulsed) evaporative cooling technique for highly charged ions trapped in an EBIT, and modelling of the ion dynamics involved.
