The applicant will seek to develop new reactions using non-toxic bismuth(V) reagents for the oxidation or amination of benzylic methyl, methylene andmethine centres and for the conversion of alkenes into oxygenated or aminated derivatives. The study will focus on the solubilisation of bismuthate(V)salts to enhance their reactivity in organic or fluorous phase media. This will be effected by formation of complexes of potassium bismuthate with 18-crown-6 or through the use of quaternary ammonium phase transfer catalysts. The study will tie extended to the development of catalytic cyclesdependent upon bismuth(V) arid bismuth(III) using peroxide derivatives as the stoichiometric oxidant. Novel imido bismuth(V) reagents examinedfor allylic and benzylic amination reactions. These transformations will be of considerable value in the scale up synthesis of aromatic aldehydes, ketonesand carboxylic acid derivatives and of benzylic and allylic alcohols and amine derivatives without recourse to potassium permanganate, chlorine or otherhazardous reagents. Several of the reagents introduced will ultimately have the potential for immobilisation thereby enhancing the economics of theprocess and the minimisation of the waste generated in the application of these oxidation reactions.
