We aim to develop planar chiral cationic allylmolybdenum complexes for use in fragment linkage reactions. The reactions are notable because (a) they work in highly hindered steric environments where existing methods fail, (b) they are not subject to the complications attending mismatched pairs when chiral substrates and reactants are used and (c) they work with relatively hard organometallic nucleophiles beyond the pale of Pd chemistry. Some new reagents recently developed in Leeds for the synthesis of chiral molybdenum complexes are now applicable to highly substituted and functionalised substrates. The scope, stereochemistry and regiocehmistry of the addition of C-nucleophiles to the molybdenum complexes will be explored in the context of 4 challenging natural products each of which illuminates a different facet of the reaction.
