Summary on Grant Application Form
We will investigate approximation by radial basis functions on spheres, focussing mainly on the two areas of strictly positive definite functions (which is intimately connecteed to the well-posedness of certain interpolation problems using radial basis functions) and error estimates. In the area of strictly positive definite functions we will concentrate our efforts on a few natural conjectures, and will hope to establish useful characterisations of such functions. We hoep also to investigate error estimates with a view to providing improvements through a variety of techniques, including establishing error estimates for a wider class of functions.
