Freehand 3D ultrasound is a relatively new medical imaging modality with many applications already well documented in the literature. A 3D data set is built up from a sweep of 2D ultrasound images (B-scans) by locating the position and orientation of each B-scan in space. There are two ways to locate the B-scans: using a position sensor attached to the probe, or by analysing the speckle in the B-scans themselves. The former is accurate but rarely used in routine clinics, since position sensors work best in constrained environments. The latter is better suited to everyday clinical use, but not sufficiently accurate for quantitative measurement work. The goal of this proposal is to design a clinically practical scanner, combining the best of the two position sensing strategies in a system which is both easy to use and sufficiently accurate for quantitative measurement work. The proposed approach requires the prior development of a freehand 3D system based on the raw, radio frequency ultrasound signal instead of the usual B-scans. This unique facility would also allow more speculative research on ultrasound image construction, possibly leading to a new type of image which resembles the Bscan but with fewer artefacts and superior resolution.
