Panel History:
Summary on Grant Application Form
Composite structures produced by RTM will have naturally resin-rich areas at fabric drop-offs and web/stiffener/skin intersections for example. But they will also suffer from variability in resin distribution due to either imprecise placement of the fibre pre-form or distortion during mould closure or the infusion process. This variability will be a key element in the development of the manufacturing process and the impact of these factors on the behaviour of the component is vital for high performance primary structure applications. In addition to estimating the failure loads, an accurate predictive modelling of the structural strength will help firstly to establish general guidance on limits for acceptable defects, secondly to provide an accept / reject tool for components which have fallen outside these limits and thirdly to assess in-service damage and its interaction with the pre-existing defects.
