The issue of implementing effective control when renewable energy systems are integrated into buildings has reveived very little attention. Current solutions for the supervisory control of these systems use a rule-based decision making process, where rule sets are triggered by arbitrary set points and sensor readings. The research addresses the problem of implementing optimal supervisory control to building-integrated renewable systems which will cope successfully with the dynamics of the energy source, the building and any active storage system present. Recent developments in evolutionary algorithms with dynamic memory models have shown real potential in handling problems where the search landscape changes dynamically. The research aims to use a novel combination of a static optimisation to generate the initial control state for the day, followed by the use of a dynamic memory model to update the supervisory controller at 15-minute intervals.The work will be carried out in software based on a well-validated model of a prototype building which has several renewable energy sources. This will enable the optimal control to be evaluated against conventional strategies using historical boundary data.
