Summary on Grant Application Form
During my fellowship I would like to investigate the classical and quantum behaviour of Multisolitons in more than one spatial dimension. Solitons are particle-like solutions of nonlinear field equations which occur in various areas of mathematics and physics. I want to continue to work on the Skyrme model which describes the strong interaction between atomic nuclei. Recently, I made some progress with the semiclassical quantization of the Skyrme model by making use of the known classical minimal energy solutions. My approximation obtains good results for even nucleon number. However, for odd nucleon number there is room for improvement. In order to make further progress we need to increase our understanding of the classical configurations of the Skyrme model, and ideally derive an approximate moduli space. I also plan to apply some techniques that I have used in the Skyrme model to related solitons such as knot-like solitons in magnetic systems.
