Effects of the electron-electron interaction came to the focus of extensive research, as numerous new experimental data made it clear that the fermi-liquid theory is not adequate, especially in low-dimensional structures. A particular attention has been paid to the superconductor-insulator (SIT) and (alleged) metal-insulator transitions in 2D structures. Very recent experiments (1998-2000), including those in new organic materials, revealed that the standard ( dirty-boson ) theory of the SIT does not work. It has also become clear that, in contrast to recent claims, there is no firm experimental evidence on the existence of true metallic conductance in 2D. The present project is for the second research visit to Birmingham of Professor BL Altshuler (Princeton). During the visit, we propose to develop a comprehensive analytical approach to the description of the interaction-driven phase transitions in disordered 2D structures based on the one hand, on a new variant of the nonlinear sigma model for granular system recently developed by the principal investigator, and on the other hand, on the diagonal approximation for the interaction, developed by the visiting fellow. We expect to start an extensive research programme in this direction.
