Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) form the basis of a very promising display technology. However, like other LEDs they suffer from the serious problem that most (typically 80%) of the light generated inside the device is trapped there by total internal reflection. Great progress has been made in optimising the generation of light inside the device, so that improved light extraction is now the only remaining way of obtaining a major breakthrough in efficiency. There is potential for a five-fold increase in efficiency if this extraction issue can be dealt with successfully. We will explore ways to do this in the context of LEDs based on dendrimers since they have recently given the world's most efficient solution-processed LEDs.The skills, experience and knowledge of the three partners offer a unique opportunity to address this issue. We will focus on three approaches that we have identified as being particularly promising: (i) lateral microstructure to Bragg-scatter waveguided light out of the device; (ii) lateral microstructure to recover losses to surface plasmons; and (iii) light extraction films to recover light lost to substrate modes. Finally we will develop commercially appropriate ways of implementing microstructure and demonstrate prototype devices that exhibit significantly improved efficiency.
