Summary on Grant Application Form
I plan to develop simple models for complex soft matter systems, in particular for the dynamics and interfacial behaviour of fluids in external potentials. I intend to construct a dynamical density functional theory (DFT) for fluids in time dependent external potentials. This theory will be extended to binary, phase separating fluids, where I intend to study the dynamics of phase separation in a confined fluid. A second part consists of determining effective solvent mediated potentials, a powerful approach to understanding complex, multi-component fluids. The aim is to include the effect of the (small) solvent particles on the interaction between the (big) solute particles via an effective 'solvent mediated' potential. Formally this is done by integrating over the degrees of freedom of the small particles. The final part of the proposed research is a study of wetting transitions and fluctuation phenomena at surfaces in simple models of binary polymer solutions. Here the approach is to use a microscopic DFT to construct a mesoscopic interfacial Hamiltonian theory.
