This VF grant falls into the remit of general engineering research. Microbeams are the fundamental structural elements employed in the growinc of micro and nano electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). They suffer a common phenomenological structural instability where for a small gap, the beam will be pulled into the substrate. Among the possible explanations for the lack of good predictions and the discrepancies betweer and experiments of nonlinear microbeams is the application of inapparopriate (analytical and numerical) methodology to resolve problems governed inherent homoclinic phenomena. Consequently, the primary objectives are aimed towards applying the analytical and numerical methodology of bifurcation analyses to a consistently formed boundary-value problem describing microbeam dynamics to address this problem. Secondary obje are to study the fundamental nonlinearities established in a prototype electromagnetic micro-generator with a view to improving the design to maximise power output. More generally the grant will bring the expertise of the VF (Gottlieb) to the UK to foster further collaboration both at Bristol and more in the UK between MEMs technologists and nonlinear dynamicists.
