The purpose of this research Is the preparation of novel structures for molecular recognition and fluorescence reporting of arsenic. This toxic element is implicated in a wide range of disorders and facile, real-time, non-destructive chemosensors for arsenic species will be Invaluable tools for understanding the molecular basis and mechanisms of development of those disorders. This proposal represents the first class of synthetic peptidylmotifs for molecular sensing and recognition of anions and will function as a prototype study for developing peptidylchemosensors for other significant anions.The sensors will be constructed using a '3R' scheme - recognise, relay, report - de novo designed peptide scaffolds containing appropriate ligating residues and fluorescent reporters that fold to form a receptor in the presence of the target arsenic species, and report the binding event by means of an attenuated optical signal.Keywords describing research area of proposal: molecular recognition, synthetic receptors, host-guest chemistry, sensors, anion recognition, novel molecular structures, interdisciplinary, interface with life sciences2
