Lightweight materials are being used increasingly in vehicle structures but this means that noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) transmissio become more significant. Low frequency structure-borne noise generated by the engine, driveline and road is particularly problematic. This the ironic situation of needing to increase the overall mass, and cost, with the introduction of special design features and damping materials. Current approaches to NVH reduction in vehicles attempt to solve the problems at source, e.g. by using well-balanced engines, transmission mounts and barriers. These approaches are complemented by the use of noise absorption and structural damping materials. Such material generally adhesively bonded to thin structural skins, in amounts and locations identified by analsyis and by prototype testing. A more efficier effective concept is to produce, in a single operation, vehicle panels that optimise NVH and structural performance simultaneously. Addition, functionality such as electrical systems can also be built in. This proposal will develop generic theoretical solutions and fabrication technique material vehicle panels based primarily on composite materials and constrained layer damping technologies. The detailed performance of si will then be examined, and the joining technologies for their successful integration into real vehicle structures will be developed. Full scale d, evaluations will be conducted on these structures to validate the overall guidelines and procedures developed.
