Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is for the White Rose Grid (WRG) to be recognised as an e-Science Centre of Excellence. The WRG is a primary example of an InterUniversity Grid that is a natural extension of a campus Grid. It is sufficiently large to demonstrate the political, social and technical issues of a Grid but also sufficiently small so that real progress can be, and is being, made on addressing these issues. The White Rose Universities have invested over 3m in the WRG. The HPC resources are available to users across all three White Rose institutions via a prototype Grid Portal. The WRG supports a range of e-Science projects that build on our core competencies in Real-time Distributed Design Support and Diagnostic Systems and Real-time Distributed Collaborative Visualisation Services. It is planned to expand over the next year the use of the Grid to a number of key applications such as bio-technology, engineering (e.g. aerospace and tissue engineering), Green Chemistry etc. This will often be in partnership with other e-Science Centres. The WRG has secured funding from Yorkshire Forward to expand the use of the WRG within the Yorkshire and Humberside region.
