SummaryCurrent research has shown the feasibility of the enzymatic synthesis of urethane containing polyesters up to a molecular weight of 12,000 Daltons. Chain extension to a molecular weight polymer having useful material properties still requires the use of a di-isocyanate. It is proposed to extend the enzymatic process to give polymers with a molecular weight in excess of 20,000 Daltons based on a number of biscarbamate diols and to determine their physical properties. If successful such materials would achieve a reduction of 50% or more in isocyanate consumption with a corresponding reduction in isocyanate and related emissions to atmosphere. Non isocyanate routes to chain extend the hydroxy terminated polymers to even higher molecular weights will be investigated.
