The proposal aims at developing two crutually important area of high aperture optical systems used in high density optical data storage. First, we wish to develop a theory and method to increase data storage density of high density DVDs up to 100 times by means of reading orientation of plane edges. Second, we wish to achieve the same improvement on storage density by reading the height of coded pits. The combination of the two methods will enable us to construct two-dimensional look up tables so that the overall number of states that can be stored in a single pit in case of n height and m orientation states is n x m. This means that if digital noise permits us to distinguish between 10 different height states and 10 different orientation states then we successfully packed 100 states of information into a single pit. We plan to accomplish these aims by using a tightly focused antisymmetric singular beams. Singular beams were found to be extremely sensitive in height measurments, sometimes showing nanometer height resolution. Due to their antisymmetry they are also ideal in measurements of straight edges by means of differential detection techiques. In this proposal we seek to find the optimum optical configuration for simultaneous height and orientation measurment.
