Summary on Grant Application Form
Until recently, experimental research into the effects of interactions on the magnetization dynamics of collections of nanomagnets (magnetic particles with dimensions in the nm-range), meant the study of random, 3-D systems. Here we propose to study the magnetization dynamics of 1- and 2-D arrays of interacting nanomagnets with very much smaller dimensions and/or separations than previous studies. The 2-D arrays will be prepared from protein-templated colloidal nanomagnets supplied by our collaborators NanoMagnetics Ltd., using methods ranging from evaporation to electrophoresis, while the 1-D arrays ('nanomagnet stacks') will be prepared by template electrodeposition.Samples will be characterized by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Magnetic properties wil be measured by SQUID magnetometry and AC susceptibility. Arrays of both superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic particles will be studied as a function of array geometry and average inter-particle separation, in order to understand the effects of frustration, disorder and magnetic percolation on the relaxation rate and remanence.
