The research associated with this equipment request concerns precision and ultra precision manufacturing of high value added components, e.g. precision optics, automotive engine parts and aerospace elements. In order to efficiently manufacture these components necessary production machinery (machine tools) must be developed which offer the required level of precision capability whilst providing the highest level of output (shortest cycle times). Achieving both high accuracy and short processing times demands machine and process dynamics to be assessed, analysed and optimised. Optimisation of the dynamics of precision and ultra precision manufacturing systems is however a poorly defined area. None-the-less it is a critical area which determines whether a manufacturing system is profitable or otherwise. Since precision machine systems incur high investment, and consequently risk, it is important to seek techniques to optimise their design and performance.It is intended to apply the requested dynamic analyser to the numerous precision and ultra precision research projects being undertaken at Cranfield and Bristol. Techniques for assessing machine and process dynamics will consequently be developed and applied to existing and planned research. Cranfield's and Bristols research portfolio in this area includes long and short term activities and covers a wide range of UK manufacturing industries.
