Ionic liquids are a novel class of solvents which have been the subject of much recent interest due to their unique properties. They have been found to be capable of dissolving many organic, inorganic and polymeric materials to extraordinary high concentrations and offer a variety of advantages over both water and standard molecular organic solvents. Activity in ionic liquids has been shown with a number of enzymes which are not cofactor dependent, primarily lyases and lipases. The overall aim of this application is to deliver tailored ionic liquids as solvents for redox reactions catalysed by cofactor-dependent enzymes. We propose to develop functionalised ionic liquids to optimise biocompatibility and enhance enzyme and cofactor solubility, stability and activity. This is a flagship project of the Pro-Bio Faraday Partnership, tackling a priority topic identified by the industrial and academic partners of this grouping. The overall aim of Pro-Bio is to deliver generic understanding relevant to industrial biocatalysis, and assist in its transfer to industry, hence improving UK competitiveness in fine chemicals, pharmaceutical and related industries.
