Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will investigate (i) the dispersal of particulates and sediments discharged from outfalls, CSOs and SSOs and (ii) the spatial distributions of the resulting deposition of such material on the sea bed. A combination of laboratory, CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and integral modelling approaches will be undertaken to parameterise the suspension and fall out processes respectively within the buoyant, particulate-laden jets generated at the discharge ports. Single and merging jets will be considered. The CFD model will, together with the laboratory data, enhance understanding of the complex physical processes within the jet and surrounding waters and provide a near-field prediction method. Reynolds stress transport turbulence modelling will be applied to account fully for anisotropic effects due to buoyancy forces that dominate these flows. The EU 'COSINUS' model for cohesive sediment behaviour will be incorporated, as appropriate, possibly using a Lagrangian approach to facilitate flocculation modelling. Simplified 'integral' models, giving fast solutions, will be developed. Jet characteristics from CFD and laboratory models will be integrated to a form consistent with integral modelling, thus enabling the significance of each term to be evaluated. Parameter ranges typical of prototype conditions will be investigated, for both well-mixed and stratified receiving waters. Field survey data, including 20-year series of benthic sampling close to sewage and industrial outfalls, will be provided by industrial collaborators and be used to validate the predictive models.
