A variety of surface specific techniques will be utilised to determine the structure, chemistry and energetics of individual crystal faces of a whole range of carbohydrate based pharmaceutical excipients. Once characterised, selected excipients and their most suitable crystalline faces will be examined as potential candidates for modifying and controlling the adhesive interactions between drug and excipient within a carrier based dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulation. Detailed measurements of the adhesive properties of a variety of drug-excipient combinations will provide a fundamental insight into the nanoscopic interactions that govern bulk properties of a dry powder formulation and a means of selecting and modelling the face specific surface properties of individual crystal faces to the adhesive and surface properties of model drug particles. These novel excipient crystals, in which the specific surface properties are well defined, will provide a bridge between investigations for new industrial excipient particles for carrier based DPI formulations and fundamental studies of the surface specific properties which govern inter-particulate interactions.
